Stephen Abrams

President & Founder

Stephen Abrams is a general dental practitioner with over 30 years of clinical experience. Upon graduation from the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry in 1980 he established a group practice in Toronto Canada, which has grown to involve general dentists and dental specialists. He established a dental supply company, Shywar Dental Supplies, which helped emerging companies develop and bring their products to the Canadian market place. Twelve years ago, he founded Four Cell Consulting which now provides consulting services to dental companies particularly in the area of new product development and marketing. Over the last seven years, Four Cell Consulting has also been offering medico-legal advice in the areas of dental malpractice, legal reports and quality assurance.

In 1999, Dr. Abrams began working with Dr. Mandelis to help create a device for the detection of pit and fissure caries. He is actively involved in the research and development of The Canary System™ for the diagnosis of caries. He currently jointly holds patents on this new technology.

He is a fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy and the Academy of Dentistry International, International College of Dentists and a member of the Canadian Academy of Esthetic Dentistry, International Academy of Dento-Facial Esthetics, International Association for Dental Research and the Canadian Association for Public Health Dentistry. Dr. Abrams is a senior member of the European Organization for Caries Research (ORCA) where he has presented a number of posters on the science of The Canary System™ for detection of early lesions. He was also an invited speaker at the 3rd University of Indiana Conference on Caries Detection in 2003 where he spoke about utilizing PTR for early caries detection. Dr. Abrams has published over 100 papers in various international publications on topics ranging from early caries detection, prevention, removable prosthetics and restorative dentistry. He has developed the "Triple Laminate Technique" for utilizing soft tissue undercuts when fabricating complete and partial dentures. He has lectured at a number of dental conferences including the Pacific Dental Meeting in April where he spoke about the management of early childhood caries.

Dr. Abrams has been very active in the Ontario Dental Association. He has chaired their Dental Benefits Task Force for the last twelve years, negotiating with the provincial government and local municipalities across Ontario on the various government sponsored dental programs. He has dealt with issues of access to dental care, design of dental programs and the value of preventive dentistry while chairing this ODA Task Force. In 2002, Dr. Abrams was awarded the Barnabus Day Award from the Ontario Dental Association for 20 years of distinguished service to the dental profession. He was recently chair of the joint IADR / ODA Symposium on Designing Dental Programs for High Risk Children. He is one of the founding board members of ACCERTA Claim Corporations, a dental and pharmacy claims management company.

Andreas Mandelis is a Full Professor of Mechanical, Industrial and Electrical and Computer Engineering, and of the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering, University of Toronto. He is the author and co-author of more than 265 scientific papers in refereed journals and more than 140 proceedings papers. He has delivered over 125 invited, keynote and plenary talks at international conferences.

Dr. Mandelis is the Editor-in-Chief of the book series Progress in Photothermal and Photoacoustic Science and Technology; published by the SPIE. He has also been a guest editor of a number of special issues in the area of photo-acoustic/photo-thermal phenomena. Dr. Mandelis is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Applied Physics and Review of Scientific Instruments (American Institute of Physics) and of the International Journal of Thermophysics, and has been on the editorial or editorial advisory boards of the Journal of Applied Physics, Applied Physics Letters, International Journal of Thermophysics, the International Journal of NDT&E, and Analytical Sciences (J. Chem. Soc. Japan).

Dr. Mandelis has several patents and patents pending in the area of photothermal tomographic imaging, signal processing and measurement, hydrogen sensors, dental laser diagnostics (biothermophotonics), semiconductor laser infrared photothermal radiometry, laser photo-carrier radiometry and laser bioacoustophotonic tissue imaging. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of the American Physical Society, and of the SPIE, and a Member of the ASME K7 Committee on Thermophysics. He has been on the Executive and Leadership of the APS Instrument and Measurement Science Topical Group and is the Founder and ex-Chair of the Division of Instrumentation and Measurement Physics (DIMP) of the Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP).

He is the Co-founder and President of the International Photoacoustic and Photothermal Association (IPPA), a scientific prize awarding society with headquarters in Toronto, CA, and Providence, USA. He is the recipient of several awards, including the Alexander von Humboldt award, the 2004 Skills for Change Award (City of Toronto) and Ontario's 2007 Premier's Discovery Award in Natural Sciences and Engineering. He is considered a world expert in infrared photo-thermal radiometry (PTR) and in diffuse optical fields in turbid media, Quantum Dental Technologies' patented and patent-pending technologies.

As Vice President of Corporate Development, Josh's primary responsibilities include overseeing the prototype and clinical development of The Canary System™, developing strategic partnerships with manufacturers and key players in the dental community, and building the sales team. Josh comes to QDT from AXON Clinical Research where he was most recently Director of Scientific Affairs and Business Development. At AXON, Josh worked in a hybrid role consulting for medical device and biopharma companies engaged in clinical research and leading the global business development program for AXON's offices in Toronto, London, Montreal, and New York City. In April 2009, Josh opened the AXON NYC office and managed the consulting, operations and business development activities for AXON's US clients. Specifically for medical device companies, Josh has provided strategic counsel on the clinical and commercialization strategies for device and diagnostic companies both in Canada and in Europe. Josh is an active member in the Ontario biosciences sector, specifically with The Biotech Initiative (TBI), MaRS, and the Ontario Biosciences Industry Organization (OBIO) communities. Josh is on the Scientific Advisory Board of iProgen Biotech Inc.

Josh spent three years as an NSERC Post-Doctoral Fellow conducting prostate cancer research at the Ontario Cancer Institute (OCI), University Health Network in Toronto. During his 10 years in translational and biomedical research, Josh published over 20 scientific works, including publications in notable endocrinology and oncology journals. Josh remains involved in drug commercialization as a Principal at Armour Therapeutics Inc, which is engaged in the development of cancer therapeutics. Josh has taught courses at the University of Guelph (Guelph), Michener Institute (Toronto), and the Togliatti Academy of Management (Togliatti, Russia). Recently, Josh had been acting as a research consultant for the Rotman School of Management/Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care on Ontario's colorectal cancer care system.

In the community, Josh has been involved in mentoring programs with Big Brothers since 1997, and has been responsible for implementing youth science and engineering leadership programs in Ontario and the Northwest Territories for Aboriginal non-Aboriginal communities. Josh is currently the Executive Director and Founder of DreamCatcher Mentoring - an e-mentoring and leadership program for high school students in Canada's North.

Josh is a graduate of the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario, where he completed an MBA, specializing in the Health Sector as a Canadian Institute of Health Research "Science-to-Business" Fellow. He also holds a PhD in Biomedical Sciences and an Honours BSc in Molecular Biology and Genetics from the University of Guelph.

Raymond J. Jeon has participated as a researcher in various research projects such as "Development of an immersion cooling system for electronic circuit board", "Study on characteristics of single bubble Sonoluminescence phenomena", and "Natural gas turbine/engine co-generation system" over 12 years before immigrating to Canada in 2001. He started working with Prof. A. Mandelis in 2002 on the development of a dental diagnostic system using photothermal radiometry and modulated luminescence. He has skills and experience in designing, building experimental apparatus to study various phenomena. He has been an integral part of the project team in both instrumentation design and data analysis.

Dave has a 30 year career in the dental industry. During such time, he has experienced the business from a retail, manufacturer's, and owner's perspective. He has been President of Soredex, Inc., a North American dental imaging company. He has held the position of Director of Extraoral Products with Schick Technologies, a leader in the digital imaging arena. Dave has owned two dental businesses – one in "new product development" and the other in infection control. He spent 13 years with the Caulk Division of Dentsply in field management. Dave has served on the Board of Directors of two worldwide imaging companies. He has a proven record of building successful sales teams and growing new business. Dave is an accomplished business leader who is well versed in sales, marketing, product management, and operations.

Konesh joined QDT in 2007 as a research and development scientist responsible for the software development and instrumentation of The Canary System™. Konesh also works as the Study Coordinator for the investigational studies critical for the product development of The Canary System™.

Konesh received a BSc at the University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka (1996), and a PhD in Physics at Northeastern University, Boston, USA (2004). During his doctoral studies, Konesh employed thermal noise as a tool to probe nanometer scale dynamics of polymers. Between 2004-2007, Konesh was a Post Doctoral Research Fellow at the Centre for Molecular Imaging, Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Toronto. During this fellowship, Konesh studied nanometer scale dynamics of model lipid bilayers and protein-membrane interactions. In addition to his role at QDT, Konesh has an adjunct Research Associate position (2009-2010) at the Center for Advanced Diffusion-Wave Technology (CADIFT) in the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department at the University of Toronto. At CADIFT, he has been involved with software development and instrumentation of various biomedical and industrial applications of photothermal radiometry such as dental caries detection, blood glucose measurements and industrial steel hardness case depth inspections.
